On January 20, 2005, Domestic Reduced Seperation Minimums, or DRVSM will take effect in the United States and Mexico. The purpose is to reduce the current 2000 foot separation requirements for aircraft operating above FL290 to FL410 to 1000 foot separation. After January 20, 2005, flight operations above FL280 will require that the aircraft be modified with more precise equipment and that the pilots receive special training on procedures for operation within the new DRVSM airspace.
The six new flight levels becomming available are: FL300, FL320, FL340, FL360, FL380 and FL400.
